“On November 27th, Charles B. Ackerman I of Marathon, New York went to be with God. He was a good man who made everyone who met him smile. After graduating from Saint Mary’s in Cortland, Charlie proudly served in Korea for the US Army from 1946 to 1947. He was a member of the Marathon VFW.   He was an auto mechanic and ran Ackerman’s Gulf Stations in both Marathon and Cortland for many years. He retired from the Cornell University custodian staff in 1990.  Charles was a member of the St. Stephens Catholic Church in Marathon for the last 65 years serving on many church boards and as an usher.   He was an avid organic gardener, raising 1000’s of Gladiolus which he sold at his road side stand and delivered to Cornell.   He had a surprising wry sense of humor that entertained all who encountered him.   Most notably he was an avid waver. He waved to everyone who passed him, every car that he passed while driving or who went by his porch perch on Route 11.  He is smiling and waving down on us all now.  A Memorial Mass will be held 10:00am Wednesday at St. Stephen's Catholic Church, Marathon. Burial will be in Marathon Cemetery. Friends of the family may call Tuesday 5:00 to 7:00pm at St. Stephen's Catholic Church.  In lieu of Flowers or a donation the family requests that you plant a Garden next Spring.
