Shirley J. Bailey, 94, of Whitney Point passed away on May 16, 2026. She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Donald and sister, Lois Ann Vincent. She is survived by 3 daughters and 2 sons-in-law: Cindy Boland, Sandy (Scott) Meyers and Lori (Dan) Biechele; grandchildren: Jeremy Manning, Matthew (Angela) Manning and Travis (Paula) Meyers; 3 step grandchildren; 4 great grandchildren; 10 step great grandchildren; brother, Lonnie (Judy) Howland; sister-in-law, Winnie Howell; and many nieces and nephews. Shirley worked at and retired from Whitney Point Junior High School where she was the secretary to the principal. She also worked at Wooster’s Taxidermy shop back in the day. She and Don loved traveling with family and friends, especially on their motorcycle, taking trips across 48 states and beyond. She loved camping and horseback riding, and she was an amazing artist and created many beautiful paintings for friends and family. She had a green thumb and really enjoyed spending time in her garden tending to her flower beds. But most of all, she and Don loved to dance; they did everything from ballroom to square dancing, winning several competitions.
Shirley was a loving and strong woman who loved fiercely and without hesitation, especially her children and the family she cherished above all else. At 94, she remained sharp as a tack, quick‑witted, perceptive, and fully herself until the very end. Her strength was quiet but unmistakable; she carried a steadfast resolve and kept a stiff upper lip even as her health declined and as she faced the heartbreaking loss of her beloved husband, with whom she shared more than 70 years of a true fairytale love story. She took immense pride in her home and the life she and her husband built together—a life rooted in devotion, hard work, and deep affection. Their partnership was the kind people hope for: enduring, joyful, and unwavering.
She welcomed others with open arms, offering warmth, generosity, and a sense of belonging that made her home feel like a refuge. In times of neighbors and friends' significant need, she stepped in without hesitation, offering help, comfort, and the kind of steady presence that only someone with her depth of character could provide. Strong‑willed, loyal, and endlessly proud of her family, she leaves behind a legacy of love, resilience, and grace. Her memory will continue to guide and inspire all who were fortunate enough to be loved by her.
A celebration of life will be held this summer. Arrangements are under the direction of Corey Dietrich at Nichols Funeral Home, 7323 119 Street, Whitney Point, NY 13862 and condolences may be sent to the family at www.nicholsfuneral.com.
