Joseph V. Smith, 87, of Whitney Point passed away on Sunday, December 21, 2014. He was predeceased by his wife of 56 years, Helen (Grecko) Smith, his parents, one brother, and one sister. He is survived by three daughters: Michelle (Randy) Thomas, Mary Margaret “Maggie” Smith, Joanne (Gregory) Diehl; one grandson, Eric Thomas; one brother and his wife, one sister, one brother-in-law, many nieces, nephews, and a special grand dog, Grace. Joe was a Navy veteran of WWII, a retired NY State Trooper, and a retired employee from Link. He was also past commander and chaplain of the George F. Riordan American Legion Post 974, past commander of the Broome County American Legion, a member of St. Patrick’s Church, and a board member of the Lisle Free Library. He participated in many Whitney Point Community Productions musicals, was a member of the NYS Veterans Home at Oxford Volunteer Guild, a member of the Northern Broome Golden Age Club, and the Northern Broome Senior Center (where he played Santa for many years). A Mass of Christian burial will take place on Saturday, December 27, 2014, at 11am at St. Patrick’s Church in Whitney Point, NY. Burial will be at St. Patrick’s Cemetery at a later date. Family will receive friends at the Nichols Funeral Home, 7323 119th Street Whitney Point, on Friday, December 26, 2014, from 5-8pm. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the Lisle Free Library. The family would like to extend a special thank you to Dr. Dan Driscoll, Erin and Nancy, Dr. Joseph Hogan and Darcy, UHS Professional Home Care and loyal friend Bob Gardner.
