Hedwig Geist Obituary

Hedwig, Hedi, or Grandma Geist, of Lisle, passed peacefully, surrounded by her family, the evening of October 19, 2018. Born July 27, 1929, Hedi grew up in Germany with her mother, Frieda; father, Otto and sister, Wilma. She spent her days among the vineyards of the Rhineland with friends and family, and enjoyed going dancing. In 1951, she took the bold step to move to the United States to marry her love, Friedrich (Fred) Geist, who was waiting there for her. There they raised two beautiful daughters, and took many family trips together. In her later years, Hedi enjoyed keeping up with what was going on in the lives of her children and grandchildren, as well as reading mystery novels, gardening, and going to church, where she made dresses for children in need with the Sew 'N Sews. She was also famous for her outstanding skills as a baker and cook. Hedi moved back and forth between New York and Texas, following the warm weather and spending time with her family. Throughout her life, Hedi was beloved by friends and family on both sides of the Atlantic Ocean, as well as by those who only knew her a little, and even some people who had never met her, but knew of the warmth of her spirit and the kindness in her heart. Her adventurous nature was passed down to her children and grandchildren, as was her ability to take things in stride, to laugh at yourself and whatever situation you found yourself in (even if it was troubling), as well as a healthy dose of German sensibility. Hedi is survived by her sister, Wilma (Walter) Jausel; children, Betty DeVito and Carol (Don) Novak; and grandchildren, Meghan DeVito, Katie Novak, Matthew (Steffi) Novak and Brendan (Angie) DeVito.  She is predeceased by her husband of 48 years, Fred; mother Frieda; father, Otto and son-in-law, Bill DeVito. To say that she will be missed is an understatement. A Memorial Service will be held at 1:00pm on Sunday, October 21, 2018 at the Whitney Point United Methodist Church, 7311 Collins Street, Whitney  Point, New York 13862.
