Austin B. Gilmore, 76, formerly of Whitney Point went to be with the Lord on July 8, 2025 after a brief but courageous battle with cancer. He was predeceased by his parents, Ernest and Ada Gilmore; brothers, Willard and Charlie; and sister, Esther. He is survived by his son, Daniel; daughter, Christine, son and daughter-in-law, Travis and Jennifer; grandchildren, Breven, Skylar, Race, Cole and Drew; sister, Laverna; brother and sister-in-law, Dave and Bonnie; ex wife Jodie Gilmore; ex son in law Jim Munson, and many nieces and nephews.
Austin was a proud member of Local Union #7 in Binghamton, NY, where he worked as a dedicated construction laborer for many years. He was born and raised in Whitney Point, New York, where he grew up to be a stellar athlete, excelling in football, basketball and baseball. His athleticism and love for sports and hunting were traits he proudly passed down to his children and grandchildren. Austin was the devoted father of three children and the beloved grandfather of five. Nothing brought him greater joy than watching his children and grandchildren play sports—a passion that continued throughout his life. He was especially heartbroken knowing he would miss seeing his 3 younger grandchildren (Race, Cole and Drew) grow and compete in the games he loved. He was a lifelong fan of the Dallas Cowboys and New York Yankees and often enjoyed back and forth bantering on a text thread with his family called Sunday Funday or with his friends who were fans of the rival the New York Giants. An avid outdoorsman, Austin enjoyed fishing, ice fishing, and hunting. In his younger years, he participated in darts and bowling leagues. His lifelong love of golf kept him active well into his 70s, playing in three golf leagues at the age of 75 and cherishing time on the course with his golf buddies and especially playing with his grandson, Breven. He was also very proud of his granddaughter, Skyler and soon to be granddaughter-in-law, Gloria for becoming nurses. Austin also found joy in simple pleasures—having coffee at the local diner or gas station, sharing a homemade meal with his sister. spending time at the Greene Gun Club, playing cards with buddies and sharing laughter over breakfast and special dinners out . At holiday gatherings, he famously engaged in pie-baking contests with his daughters-in-laws, adding warmth and humor to family traditions. Austin’s legacy of strength, dedication, and fun-loving spirit lives on in all who knew and loved him. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and community.
Friends of the family may call from 5:00pm to 7:00pm Tuesday, July 15 at Root Funeral Home, 23 N. Chenango St, Greene, NY 13778.
