October 18, 2017

Gloria Jean Gurney, 85, of Union Center, passed away at Lourdes Hospital on Wednesday evening, October 18th with her husband of 63 years, Bernard (Bud) Gurney at her side. She is survived by her loving and devoted husband, Bernard Gurney, daughter Terry (Dean) Lucas and son Keith (Dina) Gurney. She was a loving grandmother and survived by grandchildren Kris (Suzanne) Lucas, Emily Lucas-Jordan (Ken), Jim (Kathryn) Lucas, Michael Gurney, Matthew Gurney, Erica (Steve) Large, Ryan Edwards (Vicki Wells) and Kyleen (Peter)Terrana as well as 16 great-grandchildren.  Also survived by her sister Minnie (Bob) Brill, brother-in-law Stewart Gurney, sister-in-law Bonnie Gurney and several nieces and nephews. She was a 1950 graduate of Whitney Point High School and later in her adult life continued her education, earning  an Associate degree in Child Development from Broome Community College in 1989. She was an accomplished seamstress and for many years she owned and operated Gloria's Draperies, where she provided custom interior decorating to many private and commercial customers in the Southern Tier.  Gloria was a Master Gardner through Cornell Cooperative Extension which was evident in the flower gardens she lovingly tended to around her and Bud's home.  Gloria enjoyed painting and was an accomplished artist. She was a past president of the NYS Plumbing, Heating, Cooling Contractors Association women's auxiliary. She was a member of the Union Center Christian Church, where her and Bud spent many hours giving of their time and efforts to assist others in need. Family was very important to Gloria and she enjoyed hosting many family holiday celebrations, especially the Thanksgiving/Christmas 3 day weekend on the family farm. She held the title for the most aggressive Dutch Blitz champion during this holiday event. That family tradition she created was a highlight of the grandchildren's holidays for many years and will remain a cherished memory for years to come for all of our family. She was a devoted and loving wife, mother and grandmother who will be so dearly missed. Bud and the family would like to extend many thanks and appreciation to the Lourdes Hospital ICU staff that were so caring and kind to Gloria during her brief stay at the hospital.
